Perplexity nailed one loop: ask, get a cited answer from live search, follow up. People look for alternatives when they need a different loop: deeper reasoning on what the search found, work over their own documents instead of the web, or usage quotas that do not shift under them. Each tool below replaces a different part of Perplexity, and only some of them replace the search.
We build NodePad, so we are biased about one entry, and it is the least direct replacement here: NodePad has no live search at all. It earns its place for the work between the searches. The rest of the list is what we would genuinely recommend.

ChatGPT's search and Deep Research now cover most of Perplexity's core loop, inside the most complete product in the category: agents, voice, image generation, Projects. Citations are less central to the experience than Perplexity's, which is the honest trade.

Where Perplexity grounds answers in live search, NotebookLM grounds them in sources you choose, up to hundreds of documents per notebook, with citations to the exact passage plus audio and video overviews. For literature reviews and internal document work it beats a web engine outright.

DeepSearch produces cited research like Perplexity does, and the native X firehose gives it a live data source no other tool has. The plan ladder is confusing and rate limits shift, but for what-is-happening-right-now questions it is the strongest option here.
